The third installment of our annual Hungarian road trip series has just concluded, this year focusing on Hajdú-Bihar county in the country’s east. Joining me on this journey were my long-time travel companion Kornél and also our friend, acclaimed photographer Miklós Gulyás.

This series has taken on a more subdued, contemplative tone, documenting liminal moments from rural life, often within the most desolate settlements. The exception came with Debrecen, the county’s capital and Hungary’s second-largest city, offering a brief urban counterpoint.

Hajdú-Bihar county holds a special meaning for us, as our paternal side of the family is deeply rooted in this region. For my brother and me, photographing these scenes was not only about documenting everyday life, but also about reconnecting with a place that is part of our own family history.

Looking ahead, the project will continue in 2026 with the exploration of another county. Until then, this selection of images offers a glimpse into Hajdú-Bihar—an encounter with a region experienced through the lens of curiosity and quiet observation.
